Rasuwa Flash Flood in Nepal 2026: What exactly happened?

flash-flood-4.avif

Around 9 a.m. in the morning of 26th August, the water level of Bhotekoshi raised to unprecedented level. According to ICIMOD Nepal, Ice – Block Avalanche and GLOF struck powerful surge of water consisting of sediments and boulders. In matter of an hour, the flash flood swept away the villages and towns located in the banks of Bhotekoshi River and Trishuli River. From the border checkpoint of Kerung to Chitwan, the flood affected thousands of houses and swept away many people. The toll is unprecedented and many experts say that the incident has taken Nepal back by 10 to 20 years. The speed of the flood and the magnitude of water level didn’t give enough chance for people to evacuate to safer places.

GLOF: Why world must be serious about its threats?

In the country like Nepal, GLOF is normal but it is also the part of the proper eco – system! For years, it happened but why is it increasingly devastating and occurring frequently. Glacial Lake Outbursts Flood of Rasuwa 2026 is not new or only incident that happened. Nepal had suffered similar kinds of GLOF over the years. Thame glacial lake outbursts and Sindhupalchok floods are the recent examples. Why is it happening now! The main reason behind all these floods is the alarming rate of global warming. The glaciers are melting in alarming rate than ever. Take a note about the Khumbu glacier melting for an example. The climate change is real and it is seriously toying with the lives of people living in a nation like ours. Who is to blame for all these incidents? The question must be asked to the so called first world countries.

Why Nepal needs to suffer from effects of climate change done by wrongdoings of the world?

I think now is the time to raise our Nepalese voices to the world about the consequences that we are facing from this nature’s wrath not due to our own actions. If you take a look into different data and reports prepared by different organizations, many first world countries are behind the increase in the global warming of the world. Their nuclear works and industrial emissions are harming the nature. There is some limit to nature’s tolerance. When nature strikes, no one can escape and the Rasuwa flood is the prime example of it. Did we do it upon ourselves? Definitely not! Therefore, the world must compensate us fully and they must implement necessary means to prevent such disasters from happening in future.

We are not only hit by the flash flood but we are also hit by the economic crisis and health crisis that follow after this natural calamity. Thousands are displaced and millions of infrastructures are destroyed. A small nation that relies on tourism is hit to its core. The world must notice and they must contribute to lift us up both mentally and economically. Voices are meaningless but actions are what we are asking from people across the globe.

Therefore, we urge you to help us!
