18 days EBC and Gokyo Lake Trek via Chola Pass Overview
Trekking the EBC and Gokyo Lakes via the Chola Pass is an exceptional adventure in terms of trail and offers trekkers an all-round lifetime experience of the mind-blowing landscapes, rich culture, and physical challenges, making them an ideal journey to the spectacular Everest region. After an incredible conflating flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the trail passes into traditional Sherpa-style villages like Phakding, Namche Bazaar, and Khumjung, where trekkers get close to Buddhist monasteries, colorfully busy local life, and clearer views of the surrounding peaks: Ama Dablam and Lhotse. Days of acclimatization take place along the itinerary allowing the acclimatization of trekkers to altitude before traveling into the remote areas.
The trek reaches the beautiful Gokyo Lakes, which together offer a collection of clear high-altitude lakes in solitude against Cho Oyu and other peaks. From here, the trek takes on its physically toughest and most rugged stretch as it traverses the Chola Pass (5,360 m), linking the Gokyo valley to the Everest Base Camp trail: What a magnificent view one has across this pass, which makes it worth the while trying to reach it. From there on, the trek takes you to Dzongla, Labuche, and Gorakshep, the last before landing at the legendary Everest Base Camp (EBC).
Everest Base Camp is the main destination for trekkers who are then able to absorb the beauty of Mount Everest (8,848 m) and the numerous neighboring peaks. It is from here that the torturous ascent commences, leading to an equally stunning panoramic view of Everest and the gigantic Himalayan peaks from Kalapatthar. In conclusion, the trek sees trekkers descend back to Lukla from where they get a flight back to Kathmandu.
That is why it is a lifetime experience for any dedicated trekker. Overall, views like these and high-altitude trekking with total immersion in Sherpa culture make the EBC and Gokyo Lake Trek via Chola Pass a one-off experience.

What Makes This Hike One of its Kind?
The Everest Base Camp Trek: The Everest Base Camp Trek is truly wonderful as it pulls you into the dreamland of the Everest Base Camp. EBC, admired at an altitude of 5,364 m, presents trekkers with Mount Everest and Khumbu Icefall at their closest. You can't beat just being at the base of the tallest mountain in the world, making it one of the ultimate experiences in trekking.
Gokyo Lakes: This trail, besides the traditional trek to the Everest Base Camp, leads one into the untouched and serene Gokyo Lakes chain of gorgeous glacial lakes resting at an elevation of about 4,780 m. They are of pure turquoise color and stand against soaring heights such as Cho Oyu, Lhotse, and Mount Everest. This site has a beautiful and spectacular view from which emotions can be conquered in those sights of the Himalayas.
Chola Pass: This journey has one of its beautiful aspects at the threshold of trekking over the very adventurous and difficult Chola Pass (5,360 m). It is indeed a very terrifying part of this trekking because of its steep climbs, very high altitudes, and harsh terrain. However, the greatest pay-off feature is at the end in the form of pans across views at regions of Everest and Makalu. Paying such wonderful views, the trekkers feel that this is all worth it.
High Altitude Locations - Awe-Inspiring Views
While on this trek, breathtaking views of some of the world's highest peaks will be captured in one's eyes, such as:
Mount Everest (8848 m): The highest point in the world, and indeed the crux of some enshrined Himalayan authority.
Lhotse (8516 m) - The fourth highest mountain in the world, looming very close by next to Everest.
Makalu (8485 m) - One of those incredibly pyramid-shaped ones that remains one of the most isolated and impressive peaks within this entire area.
Cho Oyu (8188 m)- The sixth highest mountain in the world and its most impressive face towards the Gokyo Lakes. It is a kind of remote, very incredible, and high place to create an unforgettable trekking experience.
Sherpa Village and Monastic Cultures
Beyond that splendid landscape lies a great opportunity for trekkers to immerse themselves in Sherpa culture. Along the trek routes are quite several traditional Sherpa villages, all of which give an experience of what the local people are like. Many famous rest stops at the same time enjoy contact with these local people-locals: Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, and Pheriche. Trekking to some monasteries like the Tengboche Monastery gives a clear knowledge of the spiritual and cultural heritage of the Sherpa people with Tibetan Buddhism.
For Experienced Trekkers Who Seek Adventure
Right from the start, this journey requires skill and is meant for those comfortable with high-altitude trekking. The trek involves long days of walking, steep ascents, and an extra bout of hardship, namely the crossing of the Chola Pass, and with a power walk to boot!
The trek is very much a challenge, but as a reward, it offers some of the most spectacular views possible: changing landscapes as well as cultural encounters. A real test for this trek indeed for anyone who has had some practice with high-altitude trekking work and a little happy spirit into it.
Difficulty & Fitness Level
The EBC and Gokyo Lake Trek via Chola Pass is a high-altitude, physically demanding trek. Ideal for trekkers who have been to high altitudes and are fit. The following is some information regarding the difficulty level:
Altitude: The trekking ranges to an altitude well above 5420 m at the Chola Pass, where trekking requires acclimatization as treks are most likely to suffer from mountain sickness.
Steep Terrain: Chola Pass is particularly for that reason: difficult; it is steep and rugged with the possibility of ice or snow along some trails.
Length: It is a duration of 15 to 18 days. Hiking for long days is expected in this trekking.
Fitness Level: For complete improvement to this trek, fitness at high levels is essential, especially good in the cardiovascular endurance and strength of the legs.
Training Suggestions:
The training focused on aerobic exercises, including running, cycling, and hiking with loaded backs, and developed endurance.
Strength training for legs and core is spent doing a lot of up and down to prepare the body for steep climbs and descents.
Breathe training to help manage high altitude better.
Best Time to Trek
The correct timing for trekking is very important to escape the extremities of the climate. These months are the ideal months said to be trekking months: for EBC and Gokyo Lake Trek Via Chola Pass:
Autumn (September to November): The peak trekking season - one shall tend to see clear blue skies, mild temperatures, and splendid views.
Spring (March to May): Second only because, in addition to having excellent weather, it offers the chance to see rhododendron forests blooming, thereby further decorating the topography with color.
Avoid the Monsoon (June to August): Heavy rain turns much of the trail into a slippery hazard, with the possibility of landslides.
Winter (December to February): The season is cold and difficult due to snow covering the trails with buzz for trekkers. This is one season that is least favorable for trekking because it is also when there are fewer trekkers around, making it more peaceful.
Packing List
Consider this comprehensive list of mandatory items for the trek:
Apparel:
Layered dressing system (inner layer, insulating layer, and water/ windproof outer layer)
Warm jacket: down or synthetic
Trekking pants and shorts
Gloves, hat, and scarf
Sun hat and UV sunglasses
Footwear:
Sturdy and waterproof trekking boots offering excellent ankle support
Thick woolen socks (several pairs)

Trekking poles (for extra support, especially while descending steep slopes)
Water bottles and hydration system (Camelbak, etc.)

Gokyo Lakes Special Permit: An additional permit is needed for trekking through Gokyo Valley, around NPR 2,000.
Local Permits: A specific area may require additional permits, which can be requested from the trekking company if necessary.
Travel Insurance: Travel insurance is mandatory because it covers high-altitude trekking, emergency evacuation, and medical treatment.
Note: Always have photocopies of all permits and documents very useful. Permits can be arranged through trekking agencies or directly at the Nepal Tourism Board.
Food, Accommodation, and Water on the Trek
Then one more factor that contributes to the enjoyment of the trek is food, accommodation, and water, which are very important in the EBC Gokyo Lake Trek via Chola Pass.
Food along the trekking route is offered at the tea houses, and the food offered is simple but wholesome.
Breakfast consists of porridge, eggs, toast with butter and jam, and Tibetan bread.
Lunch and dinner consist of Dal Bhat, momos, noodles, or vegetable soups. For vegetarians, options abound. Non-veg food may be served in teahouses; however, the higher you go, the lesser the freshness of the meat.
Regardless, trekkers carry snacks such as energy bars, chocolates, dried fruit, and nuts; the latter can also be purchased at teahouses, though generally, with rising altitude, the price increases.
Trekking accommodation will usually be at teahouses, which are small family-run guesthouses that provide shelter and some food. Rooms themselves are very basic and often shared with two single beds and plenty of blankets. The higher you go, the more minimalist the rooms become. There may be occasions for a private room, but they are few. Most teahouses have shared toilets, but these become less and less well-appointed as the trek continues. A few teahouses further up provide just a wood stove or a tiny heater to warm the shared areas.
In terms of water, carry a bottle for filling and purification tablets or a filter for drinking. Teahouse-provided water is generally boiled water, but external stream water should be treated. Staying hydrated is key as you go higher; drinking plenty of water will help prevent altitude sickness.
Environmental Responsibility
The EBC Gokyo Lake Trek via Chola Pass is a beautiful place that contains some of the most pristine and fragile environments. Being a trekker, it is now our responsibility that these landscapes are safe for generations to come. To practice environmental responsibility, it is imperative to observe rules like these:
Waste Management
Responsible treks observe proper waste disposal as an increasingly important factor. Carry all your waste away while trekking and drop it into dedicated waste collection areas. This also includes your package, food wrappers, and any other non-biodegradable materials. Many teahouses and campsites do not have a proper infrastructure for waste management, and therefore, keep a trash bag with you to pack out all your litter. Burning waste is prohibited as that constitutes an additional means of pollution.
Leave No Trace
The most essential aspect is to follow the Leave No Trace principles. What that means, however, is respecting the natural environment by leaving no traces of your passing. This means staying on established trails and not disturbing the very delicate alpine vegetation and to avoid disturbing the local fauna. Do not pick plants, flowers, or rocks, but instead, try to leave that environment the way you found it. You had better dispose of human wastes in the designated areas or carry biodegradable bags if you will be trekking at higher altitudes where toilets are limited.
Eco-Friendly Practices
Almost all teahouses throughout the EBC and Gokyo Lake trek have engaged in eco-friendly practices to curtail their deleterious effects on the environment. Some have switched to solar energy for lighting and utilities, and others have installed water purification plants to reduce dependence on plastic bottles. Buying from businesses engaged solely in sustainable protection has, in turn, encouraged more ecologically friendly practices in this area. As an eco-friendly traveler, one should minimize their plastic use and, wherever it is possible, opt for things like reusable water bottles or cutlery and bags instead.
FAQs For EBC and Gokyo Lake Trek via Chola Pass
This trek is a challenging one wherein the altitude acclimatization and rugged terrain test both the physical sturdiness of a trekker and the 5,420m-high pass that suits highly experienced trekkers whose fitness could just be above average.
Nepal Trekking Rangers was phenomenal. Yuddha and his team were communicative, organized, and fairly priced. When our flight to Kathmandu was delayed, Yuddha met us at the airport and ensured we made our connection to Lukla without issue.
On the Three Passes trek, Yuddha was exceptional — attentive, flexible, and fun (he taught us Nepali card games we played nonstop). Thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers, this truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Trek with Nepal Trekking experts if you are going to Nepal!
I just finished the Everest Base Camp trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and would 100% recommend them to anyone coming to Nepal.
Yuddha, the owner, is a true professional. From the beginning when I contacted him, he was super responsive and able to provide advice on which trek was best. Whenever I had follow-up questions, he would always respond the same day. They also operate with the utmost integrity. Originally, I was meant to trek with them in 2020, but this was cancelled because of Covid. Yuddha reminded me that I had paid the deposit five years ago (which at the time I had told him to hold on to) and took that off the price — I had completely forgotten.
They gave me a warm welcome at the airport as soon as I arrived, and Yuddha met me at my hotel to make sure I had the correct kit, even providing me with things I didn’t have free of charge.
On the trek itself, Yuddha was our guide — so knowledgeable, fun, and spoke great English. Every time I asked him a question about the mountains or region, he had an answer. All the tea houses booked were great and had good food. In the evening, he would play cards with us, and if we ever needed help with anything, he was always on hand.
Words can’t describe the views you see on this trek — we were completely surrounded by the mountains. Yuddha also made sure we went at a sensible pace to avoid any risk of altitude sickness and to ensure we could take it all in.
Overall, it was an experience of a lifetime, and next time I am back in Nepal, I will be trekking with Nepal Trekking Rangers.
Thanks so much, Yuddha!
Perfekter Trek zum Everest Basecamp
We have nothing but positive things to say about our trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers! Our group of three friends was looking for something a little different from the EBC trek and didn’t have time to do the full Three Passes loop. Nepal Trekking Rangers gave us lots of options, and we decided to trek directly to Gokyo Lakes, then over Renjo La and back down to Lukla. It was perfect for us.
Our guide, Yuddha, was super knowledgeable, and the team supporting us was kind and helpful throughout. The communication before and after the trek was excellent, and when we ran into a small snag during our journey, Yuddha handled it smoothly and professionally.
I can’t say enough about how experienced, well-connected, and genuinely kind everyone was. We had an amazing trip, and you’ll be in great hands with Nepal Trekking Rangers.
Great Himalay experience
Hiked the Three Passes trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and our guide Yuddha. He was a fantastic guide to have on this trek — knowledgeable, professional, and a great match for our group. I’ll be happy to use their services again on our next Himalaya adventure.
Incredible Three Passes Trek Experience!
We had an incredible time on our Three Passes trek (and during our whole visit to Nepal) thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers! I researched trekking guides thoroughly before we started our trip and probably reached out to 15 of them. I decided Nepal Trekking Rangers was the best in terms of reviews, ease of communication, and price. After the trip was complete, I can confidently say I was right to choose them.
We had a specific itinerary in mind that needed to fit our schedule, and Yuddha was extremely helpful and accommodating. He answered all our questions promptly during planning and provided extra info, tips, and advice that we wouldn’t have known to ask about. When our international flight to Nepal was delayed by 12 hours, he pulled out all the stops to make sure we still made it to Lukla on time — coming to the airport himself with all the gear we rented, helping us repack into their duffel bags, and storing our suitcases at their office. It was incredibly convenient, and we would have been hugely delayed without his extra effort. He even brought Nepalese rupees to exchange from our USD so we wouldn’t waste time at the airport — and at a better rate!
Our guide, Yuddha, was clearly one of the best we saw on the trails. His decades of experience showed. He was kind, attentive, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun. He helped us navigate the chaos of Lukla airport, made sure we got the best possible accommodations within our budget, communicated with tea house staff, showed us local plants, animals, and landmarks, and answered all our “Which mountain is this?” questions with patience and insight. He told us amazing stories, taught us a Nepali card game that became a nightly tradition, and kept us safe and confident through tricky sections like Chukhung Ri, glacier crossings, and the steep descents from the passes.
When we decided mid-trip to skip an acclimatization day in Dingboche, Yuddha quickly rebooked all our accommodations to adjust the schedule. That flexibility allowed us to return to Kathmandu a day early and enjoy more time in the city — a perfect ending to the trek.
Nepal Trekking Rangers clearly employs some of the best in the business, and Yuddha is incredibly skilled and dedicated to making sure guests have an unforgettable experience. After the trek, we visited his office in Kathmandu to share our experience, and he was a warm and gracious host, eager to hear our feedback — which was all glowing.
This was a truly memorable trip, and we’re so glad we chose Nepal Trekking Rangers.
