Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek Itinerary
Altitude profileAcclimatization dayHighest point 3,985 m on Day 6 · PangbocheStarts at 1,350 m on Day 1, ends at 1,350 m on Day 12. Acclimatization days: 4, 7.
Kathmandu, the liveliest capital of Nepal, welcomes you with a guide waiting at the airport, who will transfer you to your hotel. This day is meant for leisure and ruthless exploration of the city with choices of leisure space. You might see sites such as the Kathmandu Durbar Square or Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple). The evening will be held for a pre-trek briefing, where you will gain knowledge concerning the forthcoming Amadablam Base Camp Trek.
The scenic flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2,846 m) in the early mornings will set your adventures in motion. You'll spend 25 minutes in this plane, and the Himalayas will greet you along the way, putting your excitement into the travel. After landing at what is claimed as one of the scariest airports on the planet- Lukla Airport- it's time to begin a trek toward Phakding (2,620m), a three-hour hike through beautiful green forests with suspension bridges. This leg of the trip is quite gentle, easing one into acclimatization to the altitude and the terrain. The Sherpa culture will greet you as you pass through some villages along the way. Phakding overnight.
Today's excursion leads to the Namche Bazaar, the active gateway to the Everest region and an essential acclimatization halt. Roughly six to seven hours of trekking lead alongside the Dudh Koshi River, crossing over suspension bridges. Moderately strenuous ascending trail through thick forests, pine, and rhododendron. After reaching Namche, magnificent views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse, and the atmosphere of the village come alive. An overnight at Namche Bazaar.
Adjustment is a fundamental part of trekking at high altitudes, and this day is dedicated to acclimatization to the elevated altitudes. After having breakfast, day hike towards Syangboche (3,780 m), Everest View Hotel (3,880 m), and then to the village of Khumjung (3,790 m) itself, and look up at some of the exceptional views from Everest, Ama Dablam, and other peaks that comprise the entire Himalayan range. The day will help your body acclimatize to the altitude, after which it will be prepared to avoid altitude sickness. After that, return to Namche Bazaar for a second night.
The trek will take you on this day from Namche to Tengboche (3860 m), a beautiful area where you get views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. The trek will take you through vibrant pine, fir, and rhododendron forests. The trek takes about five hours and will reach you at Tengboche, where you'll want to visit the popular Tengboche Monastery- the largest in all of Khumbu and very important for the Shrepal populace religiously. The monasteries have excellent mountain views from quite a peaceful ambience. Overnight will be at Tengboche.
This afternoon trek is a short, simple, and sweet 2-hour hike up to Pangboche (3,985 m). This is a discreet serene township that presents marvelous views of Ama Dablam and the Pangboche Monastery, which is said to be the oldest in the region. Once you have registered at your lodge, you may explore Upper Pangboche, visiting Buddhist shrines and enjoying the quiet ambience. Pangboche will be home for today.
Acclimatization happens over time after that day-long sweat run to Ama Dablam Base Camp (4,600 m), around 6 hours for that round trip as the route follows. It will show you some amazing close-up views of Ama Dablam and its neighboring leftovers from the above. One of the vacations of the trek, although it might last a lifetime, features views from an absolutely stunning mountain landscape. After reaching the base camp and spending some time enjoying the views, head back to Pangboche for a restful night.
You will walk for nearly 5 hours today to arrive at Phortse (3840 m), a tranquil Sherpa village overlooking Ama Dablam and Everest. This portion of the trail traverses rhododendron forests and the odd Sherpa settlements. Phortse is quieter than some of the other more populated villages along the route and thus offers a quiet place for you to soak in the natural scenery of the area. Overnight in Phortse.
The day will include a trek from Phortse to Jorsale that will last for about 7 hours, covering a distance of 22 km at an altitude of 2,740 m. Along the way will be Mongla Danda, and back via Namche Bazaar. You will enjoy great stunning views of Everest and many other peaks. An opportunity to reflect on the journey is given in this trek leg, extended as it will be, over green forests populated with local villagers. Overnight in Jorsale.
The way back to Lukla on the last leg is a five-hour trek down toward where you started your journey. Past gorgeous woods and minds busy with the amazing adventure you have just had, goes the contrasting descent. When Lukla is approached, time will be spared to relax and celebrate the end of the trek. Overnight in Lukla.
After an early breakfast, catch a flight back to Kathmandu (25 mins) that morning. You could also do the Ramechhap flight (17 mins) followed by a connection back to Kathmandu with a driving time of 5-6 hours. This will be followed by time in Kathmandu, where one can relax, shop for souvenirs from the city, or explore more of what the cultural heritage has to offer. It is an overnight trip to Kathmandu.
On the very last day, you will be driven to the airport for your international flight. In the time remaining, if any, a short tour around Kathmandu can be enjoyed, including getting a look at Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, or shopping for some souvenirs before leaving. Best Time to Trek Ama Dablam Base Camp
Autumn (September-November): The best time to trek in Nepal is considered to be in the fall. Clear skies and crisp weather guarantee that tours will take in the best mountain views with the best trekking conditions. Visibility, at its best, assures stunning views of the Everest region and surrounding peaks, including Ama Dablam. Autumn is the peak trekking season in Nepal, hence, there is a lot of vibe along the trekking route.
Spring (March- May): This is another very good time to trek Amadablam Base Camp. Trekkers will enjoy temperatures somewhat above those in autumn while wandering through lush landscapes. Spring brings the sight of rhododendron flowers erupting in all their beauty, coloring the already beautiful scenery. The weather in this season is very good, complemented by remarkable natural beauty, rewarding trekkers for the comfort of this trek.
Physical fitness requirements for Amadablam Base Camp Trek:
Amadablam Base Camp Trek is potentially moderate and challenging trek which has been ideal for physically fit trekkers. Trekking for long days along steep slopes will give a way to the challenge that can be physically demanding. It is recommended to be more useful as previous experience of high altitude trekking but does not deny entry to all those who are fit and well-prepared otherwise.
Fitness condition concerning cardiovascular system is of prime importance for undertaking the long distance walks and hill climbs as the part of this trek. Training for quite a few months before such travel will fetch you great results in terms of performance. Put your emphasis on endurance exercises like hiking, jogging, and stair climbing so that you can build stamina and a strong-legged basis for the varied terrain. An equally good fitness level is required for the high-altitude trekking to be able to bear the low oxygen levels; hence, it is good to be well prepared for the altitude gain gradually. Your body, being well-conditioned, will help you savor the Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek with less risk of fatigue and altitude sickness.
Altitude and Acclimatization for Trek
Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek is endowed with an altitude of 4600 above sea level at the maximum point, which can be fatal with altitude sickness. As the trek goes higher, the body will need to adapt to the restricted consumption of oxygen. Acclimatization is regarded as a very important part of the terrain to prevent altitude-related illnesses.
The itinerary has been well structured with gradual ascent and acclimatized upgraded days to adjust the body. Key stopovers like Namche Bazaar, Pangboche are the perfect stopovers to allow your body acclimatize. Acclimatization days could involve short hike rounds to see slightly higher up like Syangboche or Everest View Hotel before returning again to rest lower. This way, the body acclimatizes to the altitude slowly and safely.
In addition, drinking huge amounts of water and being hydrated overall is very important during the trek to supplement acclimatization. Dehydration only worsens altitude sickness symptoms. Alcohol or excess caffeine intake should also be avoided, as both would end up dehydrating you and inhibiting acclimatization in your body. Following the above guidelines will ensure that one has a safe and most enjoyable trek around the Khumbu while reducing altitude sickness chances.
Accommodation During the Amadablam Base Camp Trek
One of the most interesting traits of this trek is that virtually every village along the way offers teahouse-style accommodations. Simple and basic as they are, the teahouses have the essentials: bedding and a common dining area where meals are served to trekkers together. The accommodation is bare-bones, intended just for human habitation after a long day's hike for rest and recovery.
With remote high camps, lodges in Pangboche or Namche Bazaar are at their most rustic; however, higher altitudes offer warmth and shelter. Here you will find comfortable accommodations as well, as these locations espouse comfort over other considerations, considering that nighttime temperature takes a nosedive.
Private rooms in the more populous and accessible villages, such as Namche Bazaar, are, however, subject to availability and incur additional charges. These come with extra privacy and comfort as opposed to dorm-type rooms for which the less populous villages are more famous. Accommodation on the Amadablam trek is basic but reasonably comfortable, thereby allowing you time to savor the Khumbu while acclimatizing to a high-altitude environment.
Food and Water on Trek
On the trek from the Amadablam Base Camp, accommodation is in teahouses (local lodges along the trek), which provide food ranging from various meals to local Nepalese dishes. Dal Bhat, lentil soup that comes with rice, is the energetic diet for locals and trekkers. This usually nourishes energy and therefore seemed to be ideal for the trekkers. Apart from momos (dumplings), noodles, fried rice, and some Western-style food such as pancakes, eggs, and porridge, there are some other aliens.
Most probably, the menu gets narrower the higher you climb, as it is dependent on supply arrangements. However, relying on a good spread of all meals to sustain you along the journey will ensure it. Most of the time, the food served in the teahouse is simple but can fill you up because it provides your body with the necessary energy to trek for long hours. Thus, it is a good vegetarian choice as well as keeping to well-cooked foods to avoid any stomach upset.
Hydration is a must during your trekking experience, and teahouses offer boiled water. Another means may be to take along your water purification tablets or a filter, and you are sure of getting safe drinking water throughout the trek. It is possible to buy bottled water, but it is much better for the environment if you can use a reusable water bottle and purify water yourself. Tap water should be avoided as it's not highly recommended. Always carry extra water on the trek for staying hydrated and for altitude acclimatization. Have no alcohol and reduce caffeinated drinks for proper hydration.
Local Culture and Etiquette
This place, the Sherpa people's Khumbu region, is rich in cultural heritage experiences and a local tradition-filled aspect for trekkers. The Sherpa people are probably the warmest in the world, and it ought to be engraved in trekkers' minds to respect culture and customs during their whole journey.
One of the important local etiquette features is the Namaste greeting: bringing the hands together in an almost prayer-like gesture. This very simple, informal greeting shows respect and appreciation, so greet anyone locally while passing them on the way. Also important is the awareness of Buddhist traditions, which affect the day-to-day lives of Sherpa people. Always walk clockwise when passing by prayer wheels or stupas; do not disturb any monk or religious ceremony, thus showing reverence toward their spiritual practices.
When visiting monasteries and local houses, removing shoes before entering is a tradition to show respect and cleanliness. Also, very modest dressing is expected during the whole trek, especially when visiting religious sites like monasteries or temples. Shoulders and knees should be covered to avoid unsightly displays, thus showing respect to local customs. These cultural practices and others, combined with being considerate to local wisdom, will contribute to keeping the experience in the Everest region positive and respectful.
Permits and Documents for Trek
If you are thinking of trekking to the Base Camp of Ama Dablam, then you should realize that there are some essential required permits and documents that one must have to enjoy an excellent experience while making the trek and keeping by local regulations. The essential permits for this trek include the following:
Sagarmatha National Park Permit: Because trekking starts from the Sagarmatha National Park, an area that covers this part as well as Everest and surrounding peaks, a Sagarmatha National Park Permit is needed. This permit is for the very purpose of conserving the environment and wildlife of this area. This permit usually costs approximately NPR 3000, nearly USD 25 for foreign trekkers.
Trekkers' Information Management System Card (TIMS): All trekkers to the high-profile trekking areas of Nepal must possess a TIMS Card. The card can be obtained easily from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu. This card ensures the registration of trekkers for safety and management in the various remote areas of Nepal. The cost of a TIMS Card is generally NPR 2,000 (approx. USD 20).
Permit from the Khumbu Rural Municipality: Ever since the last couple of years, trekkers have been under a new permit for entering the Khumbu region. This particular permission is called the Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit and would cost you somewhere around NPR 2000. (USD 20) to enter the area surrounding Namche Bazaar and Tengboche.
Steps for Obtaining Permits:
Kathmandu: You can issue your Sagarmatha National Park Permit as well as your TIMS Card from registered trekking companies or directly from the Nepal Tourism Board.
Lukla: The Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit can be obtained either in Lukla or at the entrance gate to Sagarmatha National Park.
Important Documents:
Passport: Your passport should be valid for at least six months from the date of entry in Nepal.
Travel Insurance: Trekking to high-altitude terrain demands a comprehensive travel insurance that also covers emergency evacuation and medical treatment. Ensure that your policy covers high-altitude trekking up to 5000 meters.
Copy of Permits: Trekking continued with a copy of your permits, for you may be asked to show them at checkpoints along your route.

His quite nature, and taking care of things when and where required.
I spent over one month with Yuddha, his wife and team of assistants on treks and religious travel namely i) Annapurna , 5 days ii) Pokhara and Muktinath, 8 days and iii) Everest Base Camp and Three Passes, 19 days. I must say that my wife and I had wonderful time with Yuddha and his family. Yuddha is a true professional and goes out of way to make things happen. During my time there were several weather related events but Yuddha was able to find solutions for each adverse situation and allow us to continue our journey. He is flexible with timeline, providing facilities and help. My wife also stayed with his family while I was on trek. She thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality provided by his wife.
Great Himalaya experience
Hiked the Three Passes trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and our guide Yuddha. He was a fantastic guide to have on this trek — knowledgeable, professional, and a great match for our group. I’ll be happy to use their services again on our next Himalaya adventure.
Great holiday on the roof of the world
Yuddha the company owner has taken care of everything from domestic flights to car transfers, hotels etc. He has put together a very individual trip that has left nothing to be desired. Also the hike Anapourna Circuit was perfectly organized. I can only recommend this company to anyone who wants to travel to Nepal individually.
A wonderful experience
Excellent trek with a group of friends. Yuddah and his team planned and organized everything brilliantly. Professionalism and good atmosphere throughout the trek with the reward of walking in sublime landscapes.
A Guide Who Truly Spreads Light
Yuddha is the best guide I have ever met. He is sensitive, very experienced, and always cheerful. He answered my questions with openness, honesty, and kindness. He paid close attention to our group’s needs, and I felt completely safe under his guidance. He booked wonderful accommodations for us and handled the meals very professionally as well. I hope I’ll get the chance to hike with him again — I really miss our conversations. 😊
Trek with Nepal Trekking experts if you are going to Nepal!
I just finished the Everest Base Camp trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and would 100% recommend them to anyone coming to Nepal.Yuddha, the owner, is a true professional. From the beginning when I contacted him, he was super responsive and able to provide advice on which trek was best. Whenever I had follow-up questions, he would always respond the same day. They also operate with the utmost integrity. Originally, I was meant to trek with them in 2020, but this was cancelled because of Covid. Yuddha reminded me that I had paid the deposit five years ago (which at the time I had told him to hold on to) and took that off the price — I had completely forgotten. They gave me a warm welcome at the airport as soon as I arrived, and Yuddha met me at my hotel to make sure I had the correct kit, even providing me with things I didn’t have free of charge. On the trek itself, Yuddha was our guide — so knowledgeable, fun, and spoke great English. Every time I asked him a question about the mountains or region, he had an answer. All the tea houses booked were great and had good food. In the evening, he would play cards with us, and if we ever needed help with anything, he was always on hand.Words can’t describe the views you see on this trek — we were completely surrounded by the mountains. Yuddha also made sure we went at a sensible pace to avoid any risk of altitude sickness and to ensure we could take it all in.Overall, it was an experience of a lifetime, and next time I am back in Nepal, I will be trekking with Nepal Trekking Rangers. Thanks so much, Yuddha!
Highly recommend
I had an amazing experience trekking in the Everest region with Nepal Trekking Rangers. What truly made this journey special was Yuddha. I first met him as a customer during the trek, and by the end of the trip, we had become friends.Yuddha was incredibly supportive, knowledgeable, and attentive throughout the experience. Even after the tour ended, he continued to check in and offer extra care and help, which really meant a lot. His information, guidance, and genuine concern made the whole trip smooth and memorable. He is a truly nice guy—down to earth, mellow, and easy to be around. You can tell he genuinely cares about his clients and his work. I highly recommend Nepal Trekking Rangers and especially Yuddha to anyone planning a trek in Nepal. I sincerely hope his business continues to grow strong—he deserves it.
Well organised, authentic Nepalese experience
Wow what an amazing experience we had - thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers. We wanted a trekking holiday to experience authentic Nepal - vistas, people, places and experiences. Yuddha organised our trip of a lifetime - advising on our itinerary, booking accommodation, internal flights, guides, drivers and where to go and what to do. We did a 3 day guided trek around Nagarkot - for most of the trek we didn't see another tourist. We walked through villages, farm land and saw great views of the HImalaya. Our guide was an easy companion, pointing out sights and translating our discussions with the locals. Next we did the trek to Gokyo Lakes. The whole team made this experience amazing. The trek was planned so our acclimatisation went smoothly. Our trek lengths, route, meal stops and over night accommodation were all considered to make the trek a success. The views and experience were five star. Next we went to Pokhara and relaxed. A short guided day trek to Camp Australia provided great views and another fun experience. Finally back to Kathmandu and a walk around the Patan Durbar area. I recommend Nepal Trekking Rangers if you want an amazing, authentic, organised, safe and fun trip.
The best guides in Nepal!
Nepal Trekking Rangers was phenomenal. Yuddha and his team were communicative, organized, and fairly priced. When our flight to Kathmandu was delayed, Yuddha met us at the airport and ensured we made our connection to Lukla without issue. On the Three Passes trek, Yuddha was exceptional — attentive, flexible, and fun (he taught us Nepali card games we played nonstop). Thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers, this truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
5 friends. 14 days. 2 high passes. 135 + kms. But countless memories.
5 friends. 14 days. 2 high passes. 135+ kms. But countless memories.Nepal Trekking Rangers ensured that our trek to Nar Phu Valley – Kang La Pass – Thorong La Pass was smooth and incident-free. The team was alert, responsive, and attentive all the way. At one point, we made a decision to tweak the itinerary a bit — our guide Yuddha was extremely proactive in providing alternatives to us, as well as in actioning the changes for the rest of the journey. But most importantly, the team got us back safely. Climbing is one thing, but getting back down safe is equally important. Our experience with Nepal Trekking Rangers has been A1.
Incredible Three Passes Trek Experience!
We had an incredible time on our Three Passes trek (and during our whole visit to Nepal) thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers! I researched trekking guides thoroughly before we started our trip and probably reached out to 15 of them. I decided Nepal Trekking Rangers was the best in terms of reviews, ease of communication, and price. After the trip was complete, I can confidently say I was right to choose them.We had a specific itinerary in mind that needed to fit our schedule, and Yuddha was extremely helpful and accommodating. He answered all our questions promptly during planning and provided extra info, tips, and advice that we wouldn’t have known to ask about. When our international flight to Nepal was delayed by 12 hours, he pulled out all the stops to make sure we still made it to Lukla on time — coming to the airport himself with all the gear we rented, helping us repack into their duffel bags, and storing our suitcases at their office. It was incredibly convenient, and we would have been hugely delayed without his extra effort. He even brought Nepalese rupees to exchange from our USD so we wouldn’t waste time at the airport — and at a better rate! Our guide, Yuddha, was clearly one of the best we saw on the trails. His decades of experience showed. He was kind, attentive, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun. He helped us navigate the chaos of Lukla airport, made sure we got the best possible accommodations within our budget, communicated with tea house staff, showed us local plants, animals, and landmarks, and answered all our “Which mountain is this?” questions with patience and insight. He told us amazing stories, taught us a Nepali card game that became a nightly tradition, and kept us safe and confident through tricky sections like Chukhung Ri, glacier crossings, and the steep descents from the passes. When we decided mid-trip to skip an acclimatization day in Dingboche, Yuddha quickly rebooked all our accommodations to adjust the schedule. That flexibility allowed us to return to Kathmandu a day early and enjoy more time in the city — a perfect ending to the trek.Nepal Trekking Rangers clearly employs some of the best in the business, and Yuddha is incredibly skilled and dedicated to making sure guests have an unforgettable experience. After the trek, we visited his office in Kathmandu to share our experience, and he was a warm and gracious host, eager to hear our feedback — which was all glowing. This was a truly memorable trip, and we’re so glad we chose Nepal Trekking Rangers.

We have nothing but positive things to say about our trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers! Our group of three friends was looking for something a little different from the EBC trek and didn’t have time to do the full Three Passes loop. Nepal Trekking Rangers gave us lots of options, and we decided to trek directly to Gokyo Lakes, then over Renjo La and back down to Lukla. It was perfect for us.Our guide, Yuddha, was super knowledgeable, and the team supporting us was kind and helpful throughout. The communication before and after the trek was excellent, and when we ran into a small snag during our journey, Yuddha handled it smoothly and professionally.I can’t say enough about how experienced, well-connected, and genuinely kind everyone was. We had an amazing trip, and you’ll be in great hands with Nepal Trekking Rangers.
