Tsum Valley
Tsum Valley is a hidden treasure within Gorkha, Nepal, where unique trekking experiences can be charged in the different locations of the Nepal Himalayas. It has brought nature to beauty and Tibetan cultural richness, as well as created a spiritual aura, offering adventurous experiences as well as cultural immersions.
At the foot of the great Manaslu Range, this Tsum-Valley trek will suit those real trekkers who want to taste the gentle, untouched beauty of the region. For many, it is popularly referred to as a "hidden valley," one that was many times sealed from the outside world. It includes several Buddhist monasteries, especially Mu Gumpa, and gives trekkers first-hand experience of Tibetan Buddhism. Trekking leads you to discover the culture of traditional Tibetan villages, crossover mani stones and prayer wheels into lush forests, alpine meadows, and thrilling landscapes.
Trekking in Nepal will also get you into contact with the Tamang and the Tibetans who still live their traditional lifestyles. Amazing in biodiversity, the trekker can see subjects such as snow leopards, blue sheep, and Himalayan tahr. Activities here include interacting with Tamangs and Tibetans who still practice their age-old lifestyle.
The Tsum Valley Trek would be a perfect mix of adventure, culture, and spirituality for trekking lovers who prefer a trip away from the main tourist trail. It is a moderately challenging trek requiring some fitness training to prepare for long days of walking at higher altitudes; the track rises over 3,000m high.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (September-November) and Spring (March-May) are considered the best seasons for a Tsum Valley getaway. The reasons for this are clear: moderate weather, clear visibility, and incredible views of the Manaslu range and its adjacent mountains.
Dry weather in Autumn provides an excellent opportunity for trekking in Nepal; equally, Spring is marked by pleasant weather and blooming flowers in and around the valley, providing an exciting view for walkers.
Monsoon season (June to August) must ideally be steered clear from because heavy rainfall will convert trails into slipways and will increase the hances of landslides, especially among the remote routes of the Tsum Valley Trek. If you would like to hike in winter (December to February), prepare to be met with cold conditions, especially at higher settings of elevation, but it will be enjoyed with fewer people, giving a tranquil experience in trekking.
Permits for Trek
Nepal is rich in history and culture, with diverse flora and fauna for trekkers. An area trek permit must be obtained as one enters the restricted area of Tsum Valley. Six such permits include:
Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit,
Manaslu Conservation Area Permit
An Annapurna Conservation Area Permit
The RAP, Restricted Area Permit
It is important to permit it to be collected in that the Tsum Valley remains a culturally rich and historically sensitive area.
However, trekking agencies in Kathmandu can arrange these permits. As it's a more remote and protected area, you also have to do licensed trekking. These measures are put in place to safeguard the culture and environment of the Tsum Valley.
Altitude and Acclimatization
The greatest threat of altitude sickness on this trek comes from the highest altitudes: at 3,361m for Nile and 3,700m for Mu Gumpa. It's important to have a rest day to acclimatize properly.
Create a design for the trek that allows a slow ascent to minimize altitude-related risks. For instance, spend more time in lower-altitude environments like Chumling and Chhekempar, as it would be beneficial to acclimatize at their respective elevations. Once at altitude, increase water intake, eat well, and take things slowly. In case of mountain sickness or altitude sickness symptoms, immediate descent and medical attention are needed.
Food and Accommodation
Basic accommodations and food but quite comfortable. The teahouses and lodges along the trekking route offer room facilities that vary from simple but clean rooms sharing a single common bathroom. The rooms are generally rustic but have a warm feeling after the's trek.
Food mainly consists of traditional Nepali fare, such as dal bhat, momos, and noodle dishes. Higher up, the restriction of the menu may be lessened, but filling meals in the context of the terrain are available to recruit the strength for the next leg of the trek. Do try to maintain proper hygiene and always use purified water or water purification tablets.
Fitness and Preparation
When it comes to trekking, the Tsum Valley Trek is considered moderately difficult. There are no technical climbing skills; it involves long days of walking, at times at altitude. Cardiovascular fitness and muscle endurance should be well prepared. Activities such as walking, running, and hiking with a fastener in a shoulder bag will help you build stamina.
This kind of trekking preparation can also help the body prepare for the task by helping to strengthen legs, core, and even cardiovascular conditioning through exercise training. You would be able to walk over rough terrain and gain experience in very high places, ensuring you will have the endurance to handle what the Tsum Valley trek can throw at you.
Cultural Insight
The Tsum Valley is a marvelous place not only for trekking but also for experiencing a rich Tibetan culture, touching Buddhist traditions. The valley was isolated for a long period, and its people are closely bound to Tibetan traditions. You will come across the prayer flags, mani stones containing mantras engraved on them, and chortens; anything related to it is sacred in the local culture.
One of the most attractive destinations on the trek is Muj Gumpa, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, which has its own unique stories about the Tibetan Buddhist way of life. Its great cultural history is much due to Tibetan traditions and being up close with the natives offers them an opportunity to indulge in folk music and to learn a bit about the people's livelihood. It is vital to respect their customs, and you should always ask before snapping photos of people or sacred places.

FAQs For Tsum Valley Trek- 12 Days
Tsum Valley Trek is a remote section of Gorkha, Nepal, and has reference to an off-the-beaten-path trekking trail that can be traveled on the fascinating view of the middle of Manaslu range and with lots of cultural moments in its Tibetan Buddhist villages.
Nepal Trekking Rangers was phenomenal. Yuddha and his team were communicative, organized, and fairly priced. When our flight to Kathmandu was delayed, Yuddha met us at the airport and ensured we made our connection to Lukla without issue.
On the Three Passes trek, Yuddha was exceptional — attentive, flexible, and fun (he taught us Nepali card games we played nonstop). Thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers, this truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Trek with Nepal Trekking experts if you are going to Nepal!
I just finished the Everest Base Camp trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and would 100% recommend them to anyone coming to Nepal.
Yuddha, the owner, is a true professional. From the beginning when I contacted him, he was super responsive and able to provide advice on which trek was best. Whenever I had follow-up questions, he would always respond the same day. They also operate with the utmost integrity. Originally, I was meant to trek with them in 2020, but this was cancelled because of Covid. Yuddha reminded me that I had paid the deposit five years ago (which at the time I had told him to hold on to) and took that off the price — I had completely forgotten.
They gave me a warm welcome at the airport as soon as I arrived, and Yuddha met me at my hotel to make sure I had the correct kit, even providing me with things I didn’t have free of charge.
On the trek itself, Yuddha was our guide — so knowledgeable, fun, and spoke great English. Every time I asked him a question about the mountains or region, he had an answer. All the tea houses booked were great and had good food. In the evening, he would play cards with us, and if we ever needed help with anything, he was always on hand.
Words can’t describe the views you see on this trek — we were completely surrounded by the mountains. Yuddha also made sure we went at a sensible pace to avoid any risk of altitude sickness and to ensure we could take it all in.
Overall, it was an experience of a lifetime, and next time I am back in Nepal, I will be trekking with Nepal Trekking Rangers.
Thanks so much, Yuddha!
Perfekter Trek zum Everest Basecamp
We have nothing but positive things to say about our trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers! Our group of three friends was looking for something a little different from the EBC trek and didn’t have time to do the full Three Passes loop. Nepal Trekking Rangers gave us lots of options, and we decided to trek directly to Gokyo Lakes, then over Renjo La and back down to Lukla. It was perfect for us.
Our guide, Yuddha, was super knowledgeable, and the team supporting us was kind and helpful throughout. The communication before and after the trek was excellent, and when we ran into a small snag during our journey, Yuddha handled it smoothly and professionally.
I can’t say enough about how experienced, well-connected, and genuinely kind everyone was. We had an amazing trip, and you’ll be in great hands with Nepal Trekking Rangers.
Great Himalay experience
Hiked the Three Passes trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and our guide Yuddha. He was a fantastic guide to have on this trek — knowledgeable, professional, and a great match for our group. I’ll be happy to use their services again on our next Himalaya adventure.
Incredible Three Passes Trek Experience!
We had an incredible time on our Three Passes trek (and during our whole visit to Nepal) thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers! I researched trekking guides thoroughly before we started our trip and probably reached out to 15 of them. I decided Nepal Trekking Rangers was the best in terms of reviews, ease of communication, and price. After the trip was complete, I can confidently say I was right to choose them.
We had a specific itinerary in mind that needed to fit our schedule, and Yuddha was extremely helpful and accommodating. He answered all our questions promptly during planning and provided extra info, tips, and advice that we wouldn’t have known to ask about. When our international flight to Nepal was delayed by 12 hours, he pulled out all the stops to make sure we still made it to Lukla on time — coming to the airport himself with all the gear we rented, helping us repack into their duffel bags, and storing our suitcases at their office. It was incredibly convenient, and we would have been hugely delayed without his extra effort. He even brought Nepalese rupees to exchange from our USD so we wouldn’t waste time at the airport — and at a better rate!
Our guide, Yuddha, was clearly one of the best we saw on the trails. His decades of experience showed. He was kind, attentive, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun. He helped us navigate the chaos of Lukla airport, made sure we got the best possible accommodations within our budget, communicated with tea house staff, showed us local plants, animals, and landmarks, and answered all our “Which mountain is this?” questions with patience and insight. He told us amazing stories, taught us a Nepali card game that became a nightly tradition, and kept us safe and confident through tricky sections like Chukhung Ri, glacier crossings, and the steep descents from the passes.
When we decided mid-trip to skip an acclimatization day in Dingboche, Yuddha quickly rebooked all our accommodations to adjust the schedule. That flexibility allowed us to return to Kathmandu a day early and enjoy more time in the city — a perfect ending to the trek.
Nepal Trekking Rangers clearly employs some of the best in the business, and Yuddha is incredibly skilled and dedicated to making sure guests have an unforgettable experience. After the trek, we visited his office in Kathmandu to share our experience, and he was a warm and gracious host, eager to hear our feedback — which was all glowing.
This was a truly memorable trip, and we’re so glad we chose Nepal Trekking Rangers.
