Why is the Mardi Himal Trek famous?
The Mardi Himal trek is renowned for so many reasons. Here are some of the reasons why the Mardi Himal trek is a favorite among hikers:
Breathtaking Views of the Annapurna Range
The Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek offers you close-up views of some of Nepal’s iconic peaks, including Machapuchare, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Mardi Himal. The spectacular views of sunsets and sunrises over the Himalayas are just mesmerizing and often compared to the other popular treks like Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp treks.
Peaceful Trail
The Mardi Himal Base Camp trail is less crowded and more peaceful than other popular trekking trails like the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp routes. The Mardi Himal Base Camp trek is still off the beaten path, which offers a peaceful environment with breathtaking views of the Himalayas and the surrounding environment.
Varied Landscapes
The hiking along congested belts of rhododendron forests, high-altitude alpine meadows, high-altitude ridge tops, and to a stunning base camp at 4,300 m—all in a 5- to 7-day trek. This brief journey moves a long way scenically and ecologically.
Panoramic Views
You will be hiking on a thin ridge path, and the path offers you panoramic Himalayan snow summit views. This adds magic to your trekking.
Short and Simple Trek
Pokhara's easy accessibility and not having to fly to distant airstrips make it suitable for an individual with a time limit. You can accomplish it in over a week, and travel to and from Kathmandu.
Cultural Exposure and Real Teahouses
The trekkers can pass through actual Gurung and Magar villages, especially in such locations as Siding and Pothana, where the harshness of their life in the mountains and hospitality expose the trekkers to real cultural experiences. The teahouse room is warm, authentic, and cozy.
Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty
The Mardi Himal Trek is a moderate-grade trek and, while open to all with a good standard of fitness and some experience of walking, not for beginners. The trek entails daily 4 to 7 hours of walking on diverse terrain that varies from forest trails of beautiful rhododendrons and stone village tracks to high alpine ridges and grasslands. The ascent to High Camp (3,560 m) and the pre-dawn climb of Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,300 m) are the most physically demanding parts, although no technical climbing skills are required. The elevation is high, but most walkers' acclimatization is given by the gradual ascent.
Though the trekking is not that demanding, it drains the will and energy of a person, especially on longer days and at higher altitudes. Weather at high altitudes can take a turn for the worse within an overnight period, and the person must thus be mentally prepared as well as be equipped accordingly. For the nature-loving traveler who appreciates the beauty of mountain landscapes, the Mardi Himal Trek is a great combination of adventure, beauty, and immersion in culture, but minus the tourists that hike more popular routes like Everest or Annapurna Base Camp.
Accommodation and Food on the Trek
Accommodation
Accommodation on the Mardi Himal Trek is mostly in local family-operated guesthouses and teahouses, basic but hygienic lodges operated by local families. The lower villages of Pothana, Deurali, and Siding are comparatively better in accommodation, having basic facilities like twin beds, mattresses, blankets, and shared bathrooms. As you climb up to Forest Camp, Rest Camp, and High Camp, the teahouses are simple, with fewer amenities and little hot water, but always a warm place to sit and somewhere to replenish after a day on the trail. Shared dining halls with wood stoves are also found in most teahouses, where they can heat them in the evenings.
Food
Trail dinners are hearty, carb-heavy, and designed to keep you going at high altitude. The food typically is Nepali dal bhat (vegetables, lentils, and rice), soup, noodles, eggs, pancakes, fried rice, and pasta. Up higher, the food variety is not much greater, but more expensive since it is difficult to get goods in. The food is not necessarily gourmet, but hot and filling. Instant coffee, ginger lemon honey tea, and herbal teas abound. For cleanliness, one must eat fresh, prepared food and boiled or filtered water. Accommodation and food, on average, along the trekking route of Mardi Himal are comfortable and offer a real trekking experience.
Best season to Trek
The best seasons to trek the Mardi Himal are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November)—both offering ideal weather, clear skies, and excellent mountain views.
The first is spring (March to May). This is when the rhododendron forests are just incredible. The whole trail bursts with color, and the weather is warm enough to be genuinely pleasant. The mountain views are fantastic, too.
The autumn season is the busiest trekking season in Nepal, offering consistent weather, cerulean blue skies, and dry paths. After monsoon rain, the air will be fresh, and the Himalayan panoramas will be most distinct. Both seasons have the best overall conditions for a secure and fulfilling trek.
While winter (December–February) and summer/monsoon (June–August) are also possibilities, both of them are encumbered with drawbacks like snow, cold, or too much rain and leeches, and hence are not popular with travelers.
Trekking Permits and Travel Insurance
Permit
You need two little cards to get you on the trail.
One is the ACAP permit, which is your entry pass into the Annapurna Conservation Area. Think of it as your contribution to keeping that place beautiful. It'll run you about 3,000 rupees, something like 25 bucks.
The other is a TIMS card. This is just a system they use to keep track of trekkers on the mountain, which is good for everyone's safety. That one's about 2,000 rupees, or 15 bucks.
Honestly, the easiest way to do it is to just let Nepal Trekking Rangers handle it if you're using one. We'll just take your photo and get it all done for you. If you're on your own, you can just pop into the tourism office in Kathmandu or Pokhara. It’s pretty straightforward.
Travel Insurance
Don't even think about stepping onto that trail without it. You’re going to be way up there, and if something goes wrong, you are out there. Your insurance needs to be the right kind, too, not just the standard "I lost my luggage" stuff. You have to call them or read the fine print and make sure it specifically says it covers high-altitude trekking and, most importantly, helicopter rescue up to at least 5,000 meters.
A chopper ride off a mountain costs a fortune, and it's the only way out if you're in real trouble. So just get the good insurance. It's the best money you'll spend on the whole trip for the peace of mind alone. Keep a copy of the policy in your pack and maybe a screenshot on your phone.

Consider the Annapurna range. Visualize that side of the main, well-traveled treks, just below that famous Fishtail summit. That small ridge climbing up into the mist? That's where it is. It's the locals' little secret in the region.
Nepal Trekking Rangers was phenomenal. Yuddha and his team were communicative, organized, and fairly priced. When our flight to Kathmandu was delayed, Yuddha met us at the airport and ensured we made our connection to Lukla without issue.
On the Three Passes trek, Yuddha was exceptional — attentive, flexible, and fun (he taught us Nepali card games we played nonstop). Thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers, this truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Trek with Nepal Trekking experts if you are going to Nepal!
I just finished the Everest Base Camp trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and would 100% recommend them to anyone coming to Nepal.
Yuddha, the owner, is a true professional. From the beginning when I contacted him, he was super responsive and able to provide advice on which trek was best. Whenever I had follow-up questions, he would always respond the same day. They also operate with the utmost integrity. Originally, I was meant to trek with them in 2020, but this was cancelled because of Covid. Yuddha reminded me that I had paid the deposit five years ago (which at the time I had told him to hold on to) and took that off the price — I had completely forgotten.
They gave me a warm welcome at the airport as soon as I arrived, and Yuddha met me at my hotel to make sure I had the correct kit, even providing me with things I didn’t have free of charge.
On the trek itself, Yuddha was our guide — so knowledgeable, fun, and spoke great English. Every time I asked him a question about the mountains or region, he had an answer. All the tea houses booked were great and had good food. In the evening, he would play cards with us, and if we ever needed help with anything, he was always on hand.
Words can’t describe the views you see on this trek — we were completely surrounded by the mountains. Yuddha also made sure we went at a sensible pace to avoid any risk of altitude sickness and to ensure we could take it all in.
Overall, it was an experience of a lifetime, and next time I am back in Nepal, I will be trekking with Nepal Trekking Rangers.
Thanks so much, Yuddha!
Perfekter Trek zum Everest Basecamp
We have nothing but positive things to say about our trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers! Our group of three friends was looking for something a little different from the EBC trek and didn’t have time to do the full Three Passes loop. Nepal Trekking Rangers gave us lots of options, and we decided to trek directly to Gokyo Lakes, then over Renjo La and back down to Lukla. It was perfect for us.
Our guide, Yuddha, was super knowledgeable, and the team supporting us was kind and helpful throughout. The communication before and after the trek was excellent, and when we ran into a small snag during our journey, Yuddha handled it smoothly and professionally.
I can’t say enough about how experienced, well-connected, and genuinely kind everyone was. We had an amazing trip, and you’ll be in great hands with Nepal Trekking Rangers.
Great Himalay experience
Hiked the Three Passes trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and our guide Yuddha. He was a fantastic guide to have on this trek — knowledgeable, professional, and a great match for our group. I’ll be happy to use their services again on our next Himalaya adventure.
Incredible Three Passes Trek Experience!
We had an incredible time on our Three Passes trek (and during our whole visit to Nepal) thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers! I researched trekking guides thoroughly before we started our trip and probably reached out to 15 of them. I decided Nepal Trekking Rangers was the best in terms of reviews, ease of communication, and price. After the trip was complete, I can confidently say I was right to choose them.
We had a specific itinerary in mind that needed to fit our schedule, and Yuddha was extremely helpful and accommodating. He answered all our questions promptly during planning and provided extra info, tips, and advice that we wouldn’t have known to ask about. When our international flight to Nepal was delayed by 12 hours, he pulled out all the stops to make sure we still made it to Lukla on time — coming to the airport himself with all the gear we rented, helping us repack into their duffel bags, and storing our suitcases at their office. It was incredibly convenient, and we would have been hugely delayed without his extra effort. He even brought Nepalese rupees to exchange from our USD so we wouldn’t waste time at the airport — and at a better rate!
Our guide, Yuddha, was clearly one of the best we saw on the trails. His decades of experience showed. He was kind, attentive, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun. He helped us navigate the chaos of Lukla airport, made sure we got the best possible accommodations within our budget, communicated with tea house staff, showed us local plants, animals, and landmarks, and answered all our “Which mountain is this?” questions with patience and insight. He told us amazing stories, taught us a Nepali card game that became a nightly tradition, and kept us safe and confident through tricky sections like Chukhung Ri, glacier crossings, and the steep descents from the passes.
When we decided mid-trip to skip an acclimatization day in Dingboche, Yuddha quickly rebooked all our accommodations to adjust the schedule. That flexibility allowed us to return to Kathmandu a day early and enjoy more time in the city — a perfect ending to the trek.
Nepal Trekking Rangers clearly employs some of the best in the business, and Yuddha is incredibly skilled and dedicated to making sure guests have an unforgettable experience. After the trek, we visited his office in Kathmandu to share our experience, and he was a warm and gracious host, eager to hear our feedback — which was all glowing.
This was a truly memorable trip, and we’re so glad we chose Nepal Trekking Rangers.
