Why trek the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath trekking routes?
The Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath trek, an absolute mix of nature, culture, and spirituality, is among the most soul-touching, shorter treks that Nepal can offer. This special and versatile trail swiftly offers everything, aimed toward nature lovers, photographers, culture buffs, and spiritual seekers alike.
From the lush green Annapurna hills, into rhododendron forests, through shady-magical villages of Gurungs and Magars, and finally from above centuries of snow-capped Himalayan scenes in Poon Hill (3,210 m), one of Nepal's most celebrated viewpoints: Onward toward the trans-Himalayan landscapes of Mustang rivers change view and culture around—very different, outright different scenery. Muktinath Temple (3,800 m) is the glue that holds both Hindus and Buddhists in spiritual search across Fistication. For every Himalayan base adventurer who yearns for a smorgasbord of high mountains and nature, plus sacred heritage, this trek promises to deliver an unforgettable trail.
Best Season to Trek
Spring (March, April, and May)
Spring is when the Himalayas truly come alive. Picture yourself trekking through entire forests that are afire with pink and red rhododendrons. It's otherworldly. The weather is warming up, everything is green and new, and the mountain views are usually crystal clear. That famous Poon Hill sunrise people go on and on about? In spring, it will blow your socks off. The Annapurnas look close enough to touch.
Autumn (September to November)
Autumn must be the favorite season of everyone. What with the monsoon having just gone through and washed all the dust out of the atmosphere, and everything being so crisp and clear. The days are just right for walking—not too hot, not too cold. And the nights are fresh and cool. You can get the perfect, stunning views of the huge snow-capped Himalayas. And who knows, you might be lucky and walk straight into a festival in one of the villages, which is an experience in itself.
Now, what about the other times?
You can go in the winter. The trails are quiet, and the snow on the peaks is beautiful. But you'd better be ready for the cold, especially up high near Muktinath.
And the monsoon season in the summer? Just don't. Unless you have a thing for leeches, trails that have turned into slippery mudslides, and a thick blanket of clouds hiding the very mountains you came to see, it’s just not worth it. Trust me on this one.
Food and Accommodation
Accommodation
You’ll be staying in a local teahouse or a lodge throughout the Gorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath trek. The facilities are basic, but you’ll feel like you’re at home. Rooms are usually twin-sharing bases with a simple wooden bed with a good mattress and a blanket, and a pillow.
Attached showers and other facilities in the teahouse are found in low altitudes like Pokhara, Ghorepani, and Tatopani, but in high-altitude areas, they are hardly more than basic ones. Rooms are chilly at night, especially in high-altitude areas, so it is best to have a sleeping bag of good quality. All the teahouses contain a big, shared dining hall.
Food
The teahouse offers a basic variety of food. You’ll be eating dal bhat, a Nepali staple that you’ll be served 2 times a day. Dal bhat is a wholesome combination of steamed rice, lentil soup, seasonal vegetables, and pickles, which is not only filling but also provides great energy for trekking.
You may also have other foods like pancakes, eggs, Tibetan bread, pasta, noodles, momo, and other foodstuffs ready at a teahouse. Hot drinks like tea, coffee, ginger lemon honey, and even hot chocolate are readily available. You may also try local apple products like apple pie, cider, and dried apples at Jomsom and Marpha, and elsewhere. The food is a little bit more expensive the higher you go, but it's prepared and safe to eat.
Trekking Difficulty
The Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath Trek is moderately graded to suit first-timers and old-timers equally, from complete beginners to very fit trekkers. It is not a climb in terms of being highly technical or at a very high altitude, and thus it is the ideal way to get introduced to trekking in the Annapurna region.
There is a little up-and-down hiking on the trek, i.e., step-up rock climbing to Ulleri and step-up to Poon Hill (3,210m) but these are easily done with a short break and easy hiking. The high point of the trek is Muktinath (3,800 m), where altitude would hardly be felt, but most people feel it's alright as an after-effect of the step-up trail and road connectivity. Walking duration is 4 to 7 hours daily, based on the slope and walking speed.
Some experience in trekking is not necessary, but some conditioning through some sort of cardio workout, walking/hiking now and then before the trek, or an early morning walk will make it a pleasure. Comfortable footwear, layering, and drinking a lot of water also go a long way in the easy and pleasant trekking experience.
Permits and Travel Insurance
To trek the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Muktinath trails, you will need the following permits:
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
You will be paying around NPR 3,000 (which translates to USD 25) as foreigners. You get this permit from the Nepal Tourism Board offices in Pokhara and Kathmandu. Provide permit entry to the Annapurna Conservation Area, including the Ghorepani and Muktinath areas.
Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card
It is charged NPR 2,000 (approximately USD 17) by independent trekkers. It is offered by the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) or the Nepal Tourism Board. The card is used to monitor the trekkers for safety and rescue operations, if need be.
Note: In the event that you are trekking with a registered trekking agency, they will book all the permits for you.
Travel Insurance
We suggest getting travel insurance for this trek, though the route is graded extremely easy and moderate. Your insurance must cover:
Emergency medical insurance (including altitude sickness up to at least 4,000m)
Helicopter evacuation if injured or have altitude sickness in remote locations such as Muktinath or Ghorepani
Cancellation or disruption of the trip, particularly if flights to/from Pokhara or Jomsom are weather delayed
Lost or damaged baggage and equipment coverage
Make sure to bring a photocopy of your insurance papers and emergency contact information along during the trek.

Nepal Trekking Rangers was phenomenal. Yuddha and his team were communicative, organized, and fairly priced. When our flight to Kathmandu was delayed, Yuddha met us at the airport and ensured we made our connection to Lukla without issue.
On the Three Passes trek, Yuddha was exceptional — attentive, flexible, and fun (he taught us Nepali card games we played nonstop). Thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers, this truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Trek with Nepal Trekking experts if you are going to Nepal!
I just finished the Everest Base Camp trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and would 100% recommend them to anyone coming to Nepal.
Yuddha, the owner, is a true professional. From the beginning when I contacted him, he was super responsive and able to provide advice on which trek was best. Whenever I had follow-up questions, he would always respond the same day. They also operate with the utmost integrity. Originally, I was meant to trek with them in 2020, but this was cancelled because of Covid. Yuddha reminded me that I had paid the deposit five years ago (which at the time I had told him to hold on to) and took that off the price — I had completely forgotten.
They gave me a warm welcome at the airport as soon as I arrived, and Yuddha met me at my hotel to make sure I had the correct kit, even providing me with things I didn’t have free of charge.
On the trek itself, Yuddha was our guide — so knowledgeable, fun, and spoke great English. Every time I asked him a question about the mountains or region, he had an answer. All the tea houses booked were great and had good food. In the evening, he would play cards with us, and if we ever needed help with anything, he was always on hand.
Words can’t describe the views you see on this trek — we were completely surrounded by the mountains. Yuddha also made sure we went at a sensible pace to avoid any risk of altitude sickness and to ensure we could take it all in.
Overall, it was an experience of a lifetime, and next time I am back in Nepal, I will be trekking with Nepal Trekking Rangers.
Thanks so much, Yuddha!
Perfekter Trek zum Everest Basecamp
We have nothing but positive things to say about our trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers! Our group of three friends was looking for something a little different from the EBC trek and didn’t have time to do the full Three Passes loop. Nepal Trekking Rangers gave us lots of options, and we decided to trek directly to Gokyo Lakes, then over Renjo La and back down to Lukla. It was perfect for us.
Our guide, Yuddha, was super knowledgeable, and the team supporting us was kind and helpful throughout. The communication before and after the trek was excellent, and when we ran into a small snag during our journey, Yuddha handled it smoothly and professionally.
I can’t say enough about how experienced, well-connected, and genuinely kind everyone was. We had an amazing trip, and you’ll be in great hands with Nepal Trekking Rangers.
Great Himalay experience
Hiked the Three Passes trek with Nepal Trekking Rangers and our guide Yuddha. He was a fantastic guide to have on this trek — knowledgeable, professional, and a great match for our group. I’ll be happy to use their services again on our next Himalaya adventure.
Incredible Three Passes Trek Experience!
We had an incredible time on our Three Passes trek (and during our whole visit to Nepal) thanks to Nepal Trekking Rangers! I researched trekking guides thoroughly before we started our trip and probably reached out to 15 of them. I decided Nepal Trekking Rangers was the best in terms of reviews, ease of communication, and price. After the trip was complete, I can confidently say I was right to choose them.
We had a specific itinerary in mind that needed to fit our schedule, and Yuddha was extremely helpful and accommodating. He answered all our questions promptly during planning and provided extra info, tips, and advice that we wouldn’t have known to ask about. When our international flight to Nepal was delayed by 12 hours, he pulled out all the stops to make sure we still made it to Lukla on time — coming to the airport himself with all the gear we rented, helping us repack into their duffel bags, and storing our suitcases at their office. It was incredibly convenient, and we would have been hugely delayed without his extra effort. He even brought Nepalese rupees to exchange from our USD so we wouldn’t waste time at the airport — and at a better rate!
Our guide, Yuddha, was clearly one of the best we saw on the trails. His decades of experience showed. He was kind, attentive, knowledgeable, and a lot of fun. He helped us navigate the chaos of Lukla airport, made sure we got the best possible accommodations within our budget, communicated with tea house staff, showed us local plants, animals, and landmarks, and answered all our “Which mountain is this?” questions with patience and insight. He told us amazing stories, taught us a Nepali card game that became a nightly tradition, and kept us safe and confident through tricky sections like Chukhung Ri, glacier crossings, and the steep descents from the passes.
When we decided mid-trip to skip an acclimatization day in Dingboche, Yuddha quickly rebooked all our accommodations to adjust the schedule. That flexibility allowed us to return to Kathmandu a day early and enjoy more time in the city — a perfect ending to the trek.
Nepal Trekking Rangers clearly employs some of the best in the business, and Yuddha is incredibly skilled and dedicated to making sure guests have an unforgettable experience. After the trek, we visited his office in Kathmandu to share our experience, and he was a warm and gracious host, eager to hear our feedback — which was all glowing.
This was a truly memorable trip, and we’re so glad we chose Nepal Trekking Rangers.
